Planning a holiday with children

Average: (0 votes; 0)

Holidays are an exciting time of the year. But while taking your children on holiday is something to look forward to, the heat and excitement can sometimes get too much for the little ones.

With a bit of sensible planning, all family members can enjoy a relaxed and stress-free break.

Plan before you go

  • Everyone has different expectations of what they want from a holiday, so be prepared to compromise. Planning your activities at the beginning of the trip lets children know what to expect - and can help avoid last minute disappointments and tantrums.
  • Before taking your children on holiday, find whatever books and maps you can of your destination to show them and get them involved.
  • Older children may want to choose somewhere from the map to go for a day out, and if there is a local language you could help them learn a few words and phrases to use when you’re there.
  • Handing out responsibilities before you go on holiday, such as translating, map reading, or being in charge of younger siblings, may help older children and teenagers feel included and valued.

When you're on holiday

  • Collecting items to put in a scrapbook or journal can help make the holiday memorable. Postcards, tickets and photos are a good start, and children can draw maps and pictures during, the holiday.
  • At each place you visit during your holiday, point out an easy-to-find meeting place in case someone gets separated from the group.
  • Think of some games you can play when waiting around in queues, or travelling on days out.
  • Although it is important for you as adults to enjoy the holiday, you may find it more relaxing if you don’t expect too much from the little ones. Too many activities in one day can tire them out, so for a more peaceful holiday with children, try planning just one activity a day.

Holiday points to remember

  • Make sure your children drink lots of water on holiday to avoid dehydration and remember to apply sufficient amounts of sun tan lotion.
  • It’s worth taking a supply of child medicines with you as these may not be available to buy once away from home.
  • Don’t forget, the main reason for taking your children on holiday is so everyone can relax and have fun. Keep this in mind at all times and remember happiness is the priority!
