Summer is a great time for families to spend quality time together.
They grow up fast these days, so it is important to put some time aside and make some great family memories.
If you're out and about, don't spend too long in the sun at any one time and have lots of drinks, sun cream and sun shades to hand.
You don't have to be an athlete to enjoy sports and games. Ball games in the local park with family and friends can be great fun. Pack up rugs, chairs, drinks and something to eat and have fun picking your teams.
Even with younger children you can go walking and cycling. Look out for cycle paths or trails. Plan a realistic distance and take along drink and eats. The more of an adventure you make the occasion and the more you involve them in the planning, the further the children will go.
Everyone says food tastes better when eaten outdoors and there's nothing more relaxing than a family picnic. Why not combine your picnic with a treasure hunt or set a series of 'clues' for the kids to solve to help you get to your location?
With a wide range of gas-powered and easy to light barbecues, the days of Dad frowning over uncooked food are long gone. Keep the food choices simple with breads, salads, meat and fish (or vegetarian options) and get the older children involved in the preparation. Even better, if you have the right location why not try campfire cooking?
There’s no better (and more cost-effective way) to get away from the day to day hustle and bustle than camping. Campsites also give children the opportunity to roam about and explore in a safe but excitingly unfamiliar environment.
Take a walk and make a personal map of your local area. If you have a local history society they will be able to tell you lots of things about the place you live that you may not already know.
Of course, we know it won't be warm and sunny every day this summer, so here's some tips for -
Try simple cooking and baking. Plan and make a 60 second video with your ‘phone or video camera. Make a robot (or scarecrow for the garden). Make a themed scrap book, or collage or draw your family tree. Help the kids devise and put on a play or concert. Put up a pop-up tent inside the house or make a den, then sit inside and read out loud to each other or put on a story tape and feel all cosy. Plan your next day out...
