Safer driving

Average: (9 votes; 3)

Young drivers are much more likely to crash than experienced drivers - look at these facts from ROSPA:

  • 1 in 5 drivers crash within their first year of driving
  • 1 in 3 male drivers aged between 17 and 20 years crash in the first two years after passing their test.
  • An 18 year old driver is more than three times as likely to be involved in a crash as a
    48 year old driver

NFU Mutual is keen to encourage safer driving, so in association with ROSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents), we have put together a Safer Driving Agreement. Its purpose is to enable young drivers to come to an agreement with their parent that allows them to use the family car (or get financial help from their parent for their own car), if they keep to the safer driving conditions. It's not about being over-protective or unreasonable - the agreement represents promises between the parent and young driver to drive safely.

In recognition, drivers aged 17-20 years old will receive a one-off £100 discount* on the cost of their insurance with NFU Mutual when they, in conjunction with their parents, complete and return the Safer Driving Agreement.

*The one-off discount can be used against any car premium where the young driver is noted as a driver and the policy is in the name of the young driver or their parents.

Young drivers can reduce their risk of an accident by taking the following precautions:

  • Take further driver training such as Pass Plus
  • Avoid driving at night where possible
  • Avoid carrying more than one or two passengers and ensure that all passengers wear a seatbelt
  • Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs and never accept a lift from someone who has been drinking or might have taken drugs
  • Stick to the speed limit and take extra care in wet and icy conditions. Also reduce your speed when approaching bends and on narrow winding roads
  • Don't use your mobile phone while driving
  • Keep music at a low level and avoid eating, drinking or smoking while driving
  • Display ‘P’ plates to indicate to other road users that there is an inexperienced driver at the wheel.
