Renting a motorhome is a great idea for those who do not want to commit to undertaking a significant purchase but would like to try motor homing.

To being with, have a clear idea of what you want to use it for and for how long. How many people do you want to accommodate and where do you aim to go?

Hire rates can vary, so do shop around. Take time also to plan your budget and work out the cost of not just the vehicle hire, but of insurance, fuel, cooking gas and pitch hire.

Check any insurance excess clauses and also, if the hire company will add on any extra charges for drivers under 25 or for those travelling into mainland Europe. You may also be asked to leave a security deposit as a part of the hire.

If you’ve not driven a large vehicle or van before, driving a motorhome can feel very different to driving a car. Modern motorhomes will usually have power steering and many have automatic gear boxes, but it is a good idea to take the vehicle for a test drive during which you will be able to practice reversing and parking.

Before you drive away, ensure you are shown how everything works (and have a go yourself) and that you have all the equipment and accessories you need with you.

Think also about weight, as the motorhome may feel very different to use and drive loaded up with people, possessions and luggage, than it does with just one person in it.

Also, before you set off to your holiday destination, check your site or location booking and make sure that they have all the space and facilities required to accommodate your motorhome.
