If you would like the option of running your car on fuel other than petrol or diesel, saving money and being kinder to the environment in the process, you may want to consider converting your car to LPG.
LPG stands for ‘Liquid Petroleum Gas’, and is a by-product of the refinement of crude oil.
Whilst LPG is a fossil fuel, it is much cheaper than either petrol or diesel. There is much less tax added to the price of LPG as it is considerably better for the environment than other fossil fuels.
Running your car on LPG means you can expect to pay around half the price you would have spent on petrol.
With LPG, you are saving money with every mile you drive, so the more miles you cover, the quicker you will pay for the cost of converting your car to LPG.
Almost all cars that are converted in the UK are converted to ‘bi-fuel’ vehicles, meaning that an LPG tank is added to the existing petrol tank, allowing you to run your car on either LPG or petrol. This essentially provides you with a reserve fuel system if you want or need to run on petrol for some of your journey. A fuel choice switch will be added which will allow you to choose between the two fuels.
You must report your car’s LPG conversion to your insurance company, as it counts as a vehicle modification (preferably before you carry out the conversion).
When you take your car for its MOT, you can choose to have it tested as either a petrol vehicle or an LPG vehicle.
Like any other mechanical work, you should choose a professional to carry out the LPG conversion, in order to ensure it is done safely.
Make sure you research conversion companies carefully before choosing which one you would like to convert your car. It is also important that you get a warranty from the conversion company on both the parts and labour.
Your insurer will require a copy of a conversion certificate, so make sure you choose a conversion company that will provide you with this.
Converting your car with the wrong type of equipment or converting it unsafely can cause damage to your car’s engine and catalytic converter.
Filling your LPG tank is as easy as filling your petrol tank, but takes about twice as long. However, there will rarely be a queue!
There are LPG stations all over the country, and can be found by a quick bit of research on the internet.
It is important to keep around a quarter of a tank of petrol in your tank at all times, even when driving on LPG. This provides you with a reserve in case you run out of LPG and it also keeps the petrol pump ‘wet’, ensuring optimum performance when going uphill, downhill or around sharp bends.
You shouldn’t notice a significant difference between driving a petrol car and an LPG car.
You may notice a small loss of power when driving at full throttle in LPG mode, but other than that, the performance is largely the same.
There will be an addition of a switch in your car, located somewhere you can easily reach it (usually on the dashboard) that allows you to choose petrol or LPG, and a fuel gauge that shows the fuel levels of both the petrol and LPG. Otherwise, your driving experience should remain unchanged.
