Caravan security

Average: (1 votes; 4)

Caravan theft is unfortunately an ongoing problem which can ruin your holiday plans and increase your insurance premiums.

There are measures you can take to reduce the risk of your caravan being stolen.

There are a number of security products that will help make your caravan more secure, and hopefully deter thieves. Purchasing certain products will also make you eligible for discounts on your insurance premium with certain companies.

Hitch locks

The purpose of the hitch lock is to prevent your car being towed by another vehicle. Hitch locks are readily available, and relatively inexpensive. They are the minimum form of security required by insurance companies.

Ensure you choose a hitch lock that covers both the hitch-head and the securing bolts.

Wheel clamps

Wheel clamps serve as both a visual deterrent and a device that prevents a caravan being towed away.

Aim to buy a wheel clamp that will still work even if the caravan tyre is let down, as many thieves will attempt this, even if it means damaging the caravan slightly.

Caravan alarms

Caravan alarms offer peace of mind and are an extra deterrent to thieves who may think twice about attempting to steal a caravan that will draw attention to them.

Your caravan alarm should operate immediately upon detecting movement inside your caravan, and you should look for one that has a panic alarm facility and remote sensors to protect your awning and offer the most security possible.

Caravan tracking systems

If your caravan is stolen and is fitted with a tracking system, chances are it will be recovered before any damage has been done to it; although, of course, there is no guarantee.

Tracking systems are expensive, but will generally elicit a significant discount on your insurance premium.

Caravan security tips

  • Try to choose a Police Approved secure campsite
  • Approach your neighbours on site and agree to keep watch on each other’s caravans
  • Mark your vehicle registration (VIN) number on your caravan roof, and have it etched on the caravan’s windows. This will help police identify your caravan if it is stolen
  • Make sure security stickers are displayed in your caravan, warning potential thieves that your caravan is registered
  • When not in your caravan, make sure all windows , roof lights and doors are locked
  • Do not leave any valuables on show in the caravan, and take any valuables with you when you leave the caravan
  • Before you take your caravan away, take photos of the interior and exterior, paying attention to any obvious or unusual marks which could be used to identify your caravan in the event of it being stolen
