4x4 for beginners

Average: (1 votes; 1)

When snow and heavy rain hits rural England, 4x4 vehicles really come into their own. While those snowed in begin to dig their way out of the drive, 4x4 owners seem to go about their business with consummate ease.

At such times, it’s easy to understand the desire for a 4x4 – which get extra grip from having all four wheels receive power from the engine. Normal cars only have two wheels powered, usually the front pair.

If you’re looking into buying one, take a look at some of the 4x4 beginners’ tips below:

Size it up

Four-wheel drive cars tend to be considerably bigger and heavier than standard vehicles. Bear in mind that they will handle differently as a result – whether you’re on or off road.  Test drive a few to get an idea of the size you feel most happy with.

Being heavier, 4x4 cars may also have longer stopping distances, while their size can mean lower clearance. Investigate these before purchase.

Know its limits

If you want to take your 4x4 off road, you have to know what it’s capable of and what it isn’t. Off-road driving can be great fun but can also be highly dangerous if you’re not aware of your vehicle’s limits.

As a 4x4 beginner, it’s a good idea to get used to your vehicle on the roads before pushing it any further. Practice using the four-wheel drive system and get a feel for its characteristics.

When you feel ready to take your vehicle off road, you will need to familiarise yourself with some basic off-road driving techniques.

Get the right tyres

There are two main types of 4x4 tyre. Multi-purpose tyres, which are most commonly fitted, are suitable for on-road driving while also enabling the vehicle to manage off-road terrain. The tread on these tyres is usually around 8-12mm deep.

All-terrain tyres have deeper tread – about 15mm. They have more grooves and are specifically designed for more-demanding off-road terrain. If you’re going off-roading, make sure you have the appropriate tyres.

Take a course

Whether you plan to stick to the roads or head off into more challenging terrain, 4x4 beginners’ courses are an excellent way of learning to appreciate your vehicle and its capabilities.
