Following legislation introduced in 2003, every horse must have it's own passport. Here you can learn more about horse passports and why they are needed...
All owners of horses, ponies and donkeys must obtain a passport for each one they own. Veterinary Certificates are not passports.

The purpose is to ensure that horses throughout the European Union treated with certain veterinary medicines do not enter the food chain. The introduction of passports will help reduce the risk of a ban being introduced on up to 75% of veterinary medicines (including popular ones such as 'bute') currently used to treat horses.
The legislation will be enforced under the Animal Health Act 1981 by local authorities. Further checks will be carried out at the slaughterhouse by the Food Standards Agency. Non-compliance may lead to a fine of up to £5,000 or one month's imprisonment.
