Spring Cleaning Tips

Average: (1 votes; 4)

The sun is shining (we hope!), the evenings are lighter and the birds are singing - there’s no better time for a home spring clean.

Don't be daunted, with a bit of planning and a strategic ‘room by room approach’ you’ll find it easy, enjoyable and invigorating.

Start with the bedrooms and work your way around the house, finishing with the kitchen. Be brave and de-clutter as you go along. Think about what needs to be replaced and what can be recycled or sold.

Be safe

Take extra care when reaching high or standing on wet floors. Standing on a chair is not a sufficient substitute for a correctly positioned step ladder.

Bedrooms

Wash and change bed linen. Hoover mattresses and get your curtains or blinds cleaned. Move the furniture for a serious carpet clean. De-clutter and clean shelving, drawers and wardrobes. Don’t forget (and this applies to any room) to clean ceiling lights and fittings.

  • Refresh tip - Treat yourself to some new, colourful pillow cases or throw cushions.

Children’s bedrooms

This is where good storage really comes into its own. Even something simple like stacks or rows of open containers enable toys, books and games to be easily tidied away.

  • Refresh tipMatching storage boxes in a variety of bright, primary colours will also brighten up a child’s room.

Bathroom

It’s time for a deep clean and also a serious de-clutter of the bathroom cabinet.

  • Cheap refresh tipColoured candles look great with a white bathroom suite.

Stairs, hall and landing

Clean all the woodwork on the stairs and look out for cobwebs in high corners. Use a duster on an extended pole to remove them.

  • Refresh tip A new set of framed family photos will brighten up a landing or hallway.

Lounge

Give carpet/ rugs a deep clean (possibly hiring-in professional equipment). Wash wooden flooring following manufacture’s instructions. Clean all furniture with an appropriate product. Clean curtains and blinds and de-clutter.

  • Refresh tip  Treat yourself to a new rug or throw for the sofa.

Utility room or cupboard under the stairs

Gather together all winter clothing and footwear. Wash/ clean them and then put away until the autumn. Pull out white goods and check behind them as you clean.

  • Refresh tip  Additional shelving and containers will make utility storage easier.

Kitchen

Pull out white goods to clean and check behind them. Clean or replace blinds. Empty kitchen cupboards and drawers, clean them inside and on top and slim down contents (after all, how much kitchenware do you actually need?).

  • Refresh tip  Clear windowsills of clutter and replace with a fresh potted plant or spring flowers.

And don’t forget..

Check and service your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and book your central heating/ hot water system service.
