Climate change is one of the hot topics of the moment, with everybody being more aware of the impact we are all having on the world.
Most people would like to do their bit to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and protect our planet, and one of the best ways we can make a difference is by being more energy conscious in our homes. So, here are a few tips to help you do just that – and save some money on your bills while you’re at it!
Buying energy saving light bulbs is a great way to save energy and money. Energy saving light bulbs last 12 times longer than ordinary ones and can reduce carbon emissions by 70%. You can find a list of companies selling energy saving light bulbs at www.whatyoucando.co.uk.
Also, always remember to turn the lights off when you leave the room as this is one of the biggest causes of wasted energy.
Don’t leave appliances on standby. Each year in the UK one million tonnes of carbon dioxide is pumped into the air by appliances left on standby. This is enough energy to power 400,000 homes.
Wait until you have a full load before using your washing machine or dishwasher. Or, if this isn’t possible, make sure that you use the economy or half-load facility.
Keep furniture away from the radiators to allow heat to circulate. By doing this you will be able to turn your heating down and save energy. Lowering your thermostat by just one degree can save 10% on your heating bills.
Make sure that you defrost your freezer regularly as an iced-up freezer uses more energy. Also avoid putting hot food straight into the freezer as this again requires more energy as the freezer tries to cool it down.
