Gardening: greenhouse tips

Average: (2 votes; 5)

Greenhouses enable you to grow a wider range of plants, vegetables and fruits than your garden could cater for.

As a greenhouse gardener, all the worry of the ever-changing weather ruining your crops is put to an end.

Greenhouses convert solar energy from the sun into heat. This natural heat is captured and intensified, creating a much warmer environment to suit plants that grow in warmer climates.

With a shaded area those plants needing less sunlight also thrive.

Get more from your garden by following our greenhouse tips:

Greenhouse tips - things to consider

  • Your greenhouse will be more secure if bolted to a hard, flat surface.
  • One side should face south to get the best heat. Aim for the ridge line of big greenhouses to go east to west so the longer side is south facing.
  • Your greenhouse should be well ventilated to avoid humidity.
  • As a greenhouse gardener, you will need to provide water for your plants. An ecologically friendly rainwater system can collect, and evenly distribute, water from downspouts and gutters.
  • A fence or bush may protect your greenhouse from strong winds, but keep it away from overhanging trees that may crash into it and cause damage.

The benefits of being a greenhouse gardener

  • Fresh food! Being a greenhouse gardener means you know what chemicals (or not) have been put on your tomatoes and chilli peppers. No more worries about pesticides finding their way into your dinner.
  • With healthy plants and no weeds, greenhouses take less effort to maintain than your garden.
  • The danger of birds and slugs eating away at your plants is no problem for the greenhouse gardener - plants are safely tucked inside.
  • Greenhouses can increase the value of your home.
  • Share your hobby with others. Family members or friends who enjoy gardening can join you as greenhouse gardener for some fun bonding time.
  • Encourage your children to pick up gardening and greenhouse tips. No worries about getting muddy or playing too far from the house - they'll be in close proximity and protected from the weather!
  • Home grown plants are great gifts for loved ones.
  • Improve the production and efficiency of your crop. As a greenhouse gardener you'll find your produce grows bigger and healthier - and you get more of it!
